From choosing the right grass for your garden to the finished, watered-in lawn, here's everything we do and how it works.
South Africa's climate and sun exposure vary a lot from one garden to the next, and from one side of a house to the other. The grass that thrives in full Highveld sun isn't the one that will survive under a row of trees. We supply and install four grass types that between them cover almost every residential and commercial garden in Gauteng.
Pennisetum clandestinum
Kikuyu is the grass most Gauteng gardens are already growing, and for good reason. Native to the East African highlands, it's a vigorous, fast-spreading grass that handles our Highveld summers, heavy thunderstorms, and heat without complaint. It spreads by both surface runners (stolons) and underground rhizomes, which is what makes it so good at repairing itself after wear and filling in bare patches.
It's a coarser, medium-textured grass with a bright, rich green colour in summer. In colder parts of Gauteng it will go semi-dormant and straw-coloured through the depths of winter, greening up again reliably once the frost passes. Because it grows fast, it needs more regular mowing than a slower grass, but that same vigour is exactly what makes it tough enough for kids, pets, and daily use.
| Sun | Full sun (struggles in heavy shade) |
| Traffic | Very high — the toughest of the four |
| Maintenance | Moderate to high (fast growth, frequent mowing) |
| Best for | Family gardens, pets, sports use, most open-sun areas |
Stenotaphrum hybrid
LM Berea is the grass to choose when part of your garden simply doesn't get enough sun for Kikuyu to thrive. Its standout feature is genuinely outstanding shade tolerance — it's one of the few lawn grasses that will hold its density and colour under trees, along the shaded side of a house, or in an enclosed courtyard.
The leaf is softer and finer than Kikuyu, which also makes it pleasant underfoot in gardens used for relaxing rather than hard play. It still needs some light to perform well; it isn't a grass for deep, permanent shade, but for the dappled or partial shade found in most suburban gardens it's the clear choice. Growth is more moderate than Kikuyu, so it asks less of you in terms of mowing.
| Sun | Partial shade to full sun |
| Traffic | Moderate |
| Maintenance | Low to moderate |
| Best for | Shaded gardens, courtyards, areas under trees |
Cynodon hybrid
Tiffspot is a fine-leafed hybrid grass bred for a dense, even, manicured finish — the kind of lawn surface you'll recognise from sports fields and bowling greens. The blade is noticeably finer and softer than Kikuyu, and it establishes and fills in quickly, levelling out into a smooth, consistent surface.
That fine texture comes with a trade-off: Tiffspot wants full sun and doesn't tolerate shade well, and keeping it looking its best means more frequent mowing and feeding than a tougher, coarser grass. For a front lawn, entrance feature, or any area where a crisp, high-end finish matters more than low-maintenance toughness, it's hard to beat.
| Sun | Full sun only |
| Traffic | Moderate (built for a fine finish, not heavy wear) |
| Maintenance | Higher (frequent mowing and feeding) |
| Best for | Feature lawns, entrances, sports and show surfaces |
Selected low-maintenance blend
All Season grass is selected specifically to stay greener for longer through the cooler months, when most other warm-season lawns in Gauteng are semi-dormant. It carries tough, resilient grains that hold their density even when growth slows down in winter, which means less patchiness and less work keeping it looking presentable year-round.
Overall maintenance is lower than Kikuyu or Tiffspot, which makes it a sensible choice for commercial properties, body corporates, and any garden where you want a consistently tidy lawn without a demanding mowing and feeding schedule.
| Sun | Full sun |
| Traffic | Moderate to high |
| Maintenance | Low |
| Best for | Low-maintenance gardens, complexes, commercial properties |
A lawn is only as good as the ground it goes down on. Before any grass is laid, we clear old grass and weeds, level the site, and treat and prepare the soil so your new lawn has a clean, even base to root into. Skipping this step is the single biggest reason instant lawn fails to establish properly — it is never worth rushing.
Once the ground is ready, we lay fresh-cut instant lawn rolled out tightly edge-to-edge, rolled for good soil contact, and watered in on the day. Because the grass arrives freshly cut rather than grown from seed, you get a full, usable lawn immediately rather than waiting months for coverage.
A new lawn needs feeding to root deeply and establish well, and an older lawn needs ongoing care to stay thick and green rather than thinning out. We apply starter fertiliser at installation and offer ongoing feeding programmes and general lawn care for established gardens.
Lawn is usually only part of the picture. We design and plant flower beds, borders, and simple landscaping features alongside your new lawn, so the whole garden comes together rather than just the grass.
Good soil makes everything else work better. We supply quality compost and manure in bulk — for new beds, top-dressing an existing lawn, or your own garden projects — delivered to site.
Measure the length and width of the area in metres and multiply for square metres. We generally recommend adding about 5–10% extra to allow for cutting and fitting around edges and features — we'll confirm the exact amount during your site visit or quote.
Give it about two weeks before regular foot traffic, and avoid it entirely for the first few days while it roots in. Light use after two weeks is usually fine; hold off on heavy use, mowing, or play equipment until it's clearly rooted and growing.
Daily watering for the first two weeks is essential — this is the single biggest factor in whether a new lawn establishes well. After that, you can taper down gradually to a normal watering schedule over the following month.
Spring through early autumn gives the fastest, most reliable establishment, since the grass is actively growing. Installations are still possible outside this window, but establishment is slower and more care is needed, especially with frost-sensitive grasses like Kikuyu.
It can, but growth and rooting slow right down during the cold months, particularly for Kikuyu and Tiffspot. All Season grass handles a winter install better than most. We'll be upfront if timing isn't ideal for your chosen grass.
LM Berea, by some distance. It's the only one of the four with genuine shade tolerance, and it will perform well in partial shade where Kikuyu or Tiffspot would thin out and fail.
Yes — land pre-treatment, including removing old grass and weeds and levelling the site, is part of our standard process before any new lawn goes down.
